  • I Love Macaroons

It was the love of first sight during my trip to Paris last year. We walked along Champs-Elysées street and looked for somewhere to have lunch. I had in mind that since we were in France we must at least have a fine dining French crusine. Then we saw this gorgeous restaurant with green and gold theme and golden Ladurée sign.

I must say I never heard of this name until then. The food was nice and my dessert was this beautiful giant Raspberry Macaroon.

It gave me an inspiration to make some macaroons. I googled for the recipe and did some research before cracking on this French yummy biscuit. ..and here is the result of my first attempt.

  • Our New Home

After over 10 months of looking, we finally bought a house at an auction last week. It was my first ever auction. I was excited but my partner Nick was much worst. He couldn't even write his name on the contract as his hands didn't stop shaking. It was funny!

Well, it's a terrace house with three bedrooms, three levels and underground carpark plus storage. We both loved the place as soon as we saw it at the house opening. We will change the carpet and maybe a fresh paint before moving in. I hate packing then unpacking and all the hassle of changing the address, but this would be the last time or at least another 10 years.

The photos were taken by the real estate agent for an auction, so the furnitures are not ours.

  • Baked Karie-pap

Last week I had a craving for 'karie-pap' or curry puff.  I made the filling by frying diced chicken breast, onion, potato, pea, corn and seasoning with curry powder and soy sauce. I cheated by using frozen puff pastry that I bought. ..then fold in triangle, square and round shape which look more like pies. As deep fry is not an option, I baked them in the over instead. They turned out quite nice.

  • Duo Birthday Cake

I baked another birthday cake a few weeks ago. This one is for my sister's partner and his son. Dad and son share the same birthday.. how cool is that! My sister asked me to make a cake that enough for 15 people. I don't have a large cake tin, the ones I got is only 7" and 9". So I came up with an idea of a tier cake.

Strawberry is in season at the moment and it's pretty cheap. I thought I would try making a strawberry layered cake with white chocolate icing. It was my first attempt to make a strawberry cake. My partner Nick warned me it could turn out disgustingly sweet as the two main ingredients, strawberry and white chocolate are quite sweet.

I wanted a soft sponge cake which I adapted from a few number of recipes found on the internet. I baked a 7" tall and 9" short round cakes. The small tall one was halved and layered with sliced strawberry and white chocolate ganache then covered with fondant icing. The large short one was covered with white chocolate icing then assembled together. Then it's time for decoration, I had an idea of two male icing models referring to father and son sitting on the cake. I sculpted two icing models which I found some samples on the internet. Once again, my first attempt for making an icing model. When I finished the dad model which I dressed with black jacket, Nick said don't make the other one in the same dress. Because it would look more like two male models for a gay wedding. So I tried to make the son character look younger with white shirt and blue jeans. Finally I decorated the cake with sliced almond and fondant letter, "Happy Birthday Andy & Tony!". ... not a bad job?
